How to get forest transit and felling permission for timber trees?

Felling and transporting scheduled timber trees grown on private patta land is regulated under the Tamil Nadu Timber Transit Rules.

Exempted species (No felling permission required):

  • Casuarina, Eucalyptus, Subabul, Neem, and common agricultural fruit trees do not require cutting permits.

Scheduled species (Prior permit mandatory):

  • Teak, Rosewood, Red Sanders, and Sandalwood require felling permission and a forest transit pass.
  • Sandalwood trees can only be extracted and auctioned through the State Forest Depot, with net proceeds remitted to the tree owner.

How to apply:

  • Apply online at forests.tn.gov.in or submit an application to the local Forest Range Officer (FRO) with Land Patta and VAO ownership certificate.
